Senior Traffic Engineer

Salary/Rate: Up to $109,000 per year (Permanent) or Up to $100 per hour (Contract)
Job Description:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Traffic Engineer to join a government agency overseeing traffic systems and transportation infrastructure on Florida's West Coast. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and improving traffic systems, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians in the region. You will work directly with government teams and be involved in the development, planning, and execution of traffic engineering projects in alignment with state and federal guidelines.
The ideal candidate will have a proven background in traffic engineering, excellent technical and project management skills, and a passion for public service and improving transportation systems. As part of this role, you will be required to obtain your Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license within six months of starting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Traffic System Design: Lead the design and analysis of traffic management systems, including roadways, intersections, signage, and traffic control measures, ensuring safety and compliance with Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and other local regulations.
- Project Management: Oversee the execution of traffic engineering projects from inception to completion, including budgeting, scheduling, and coordination with internal teams and external contractors.
- Traffic Studies & Analysis: Conduct traffic flow studies, accident analysis, capacity analysis, and other engineering evaluations to recommend traffic improvements and upgrades.
- Collaboration with Government Agencies: Work closely with federal, state, and local government entities, ensuring projects meet public safety, sustainability, and environmental standards.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure all designs and implementations adhere to federal, state, and local codes, including FDOT standards and guidelines. Prioritize safety in all aspects of traffic engineering.
- Reporting & Documentation: Prepare technical reports, traffic impact assessments, and other documentation for internal stakeholders and government authorities.
- Mentorship & Guidance: Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and other staff, helping develop a cohesive and effective team.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum 5+ years of experience in traffic engineering, with a strong focus on traffic design, analysis, and project management.
- PE License: Must be eligible to obtain a Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license within six months of hire.
- Technical Skills: Proficient with traffic engineering software (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM, HCS), AutoCAD, and other design and simulation tools.
- Knowledge: In-depth understanding of FDOT standards, traffic laws, and safety protocols. Experience with public sector projects and government regulations is a plus.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to stakeholders.
- Problem Solving: Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to manage complex projects and solve technical challenges.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Florida PE License: Preference given to candidates who already hold a Florida PE license.
- Leadership Experience: Previous experience managing teams or leading projects in a government or public-sector environment.
- Traffic Simulation & Modeling: Experience with advanced traffic simulation software and modeling techniques.
Compensation:
- Permanent Employment: Up to $109,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Contract Employment: Up to $100 per hour, depending on experience.
